Some of the visitors to the site may remember the "Star Bites" cook
book and tape that we advertised here a few years ago to help raise
funds for the Diana, Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
The lady who started this fundraising event, Sheila Swan, said, "The
life of my youngest grandchild, Katy has been saved by the Children’s
Hospital and it was decided that any future fundraising would be to
help the surgeon who saved her life.
This book was printed free of charge by the Birmingham Evening Mail.
Contributors included Dame Thora Hird, Crown Prince Albert of Monaco,
the Queen of Jordan, Jerome Flynn, Tony Blair, Paul McCartney, Kevin
Keegan, Sir Steve Redgrave, Ken Dodd, Julie Walters, Paul Merson, Duchess
of Westminster, Nick Knight, Eamonn Holmes, Lord Richard Attenborough,

The book is no longer available but a cassette tape entitled
"Star Bites" where you can listen to the voices of the celebrities reading
their own recipe in their own inimitable style. You can hear the voices
of Jerome Flynn, Daniel O'Donnell, Chris Tarrant, Dr. Carl Chinn MBE,
Dame Thora Hurd, Lady Cobham (round the world yachtswoman Lisa Clayton),
Michael Aspel, Eamonn Holmes, Lisa Potts G.M., Ed Doolan MBE, Ray Graydon,
Malcolm Boyden, Nick Owen, Sue Beardsmore and many others which accompanied
the book is still available.
Shelia said, "I met Jerome in a book shop in Birmingham
and asked him for his favourite recipe. I later asked him to record
his favourite recipe on a cassette tape. I then received a telephone
call from him. He thought he had missed the deadline for the tape but,
of course, I convinced him there was plenty of time. I think you will
find his contribution to the tape amusing and very natural - I was really
pleased. I am delighted that Jerome is part of this fundraiser. It seems
strange that this should happen - a few years ago when I took early
retirement from teaching, I was given a framed, signed photograph of
Jerome".
